A teen driver rear-ended a school bus in Emmett according to Idaho State Police. The bus stopped at an intersection and activated the lights and stop sign to alert other drivers. One vehicle stopped behind the bus, however, the teen driver failed to yield to the stopped school bus and rear-ended the first car which then collided with the school bus. The driver of the school bus and the driver of the first car stopped were not injured. All children on the bus and at the bus stop were also unharmed. The teen driver was taken to a nearby medical center for evaluation of injuries. Traffic was diverted for about an hour while crews worked to clear the accident.
Idaho Rules for Stopping for a School Bus
Often times drivers may be confused whether it is necessary to stop for a school bus. Here are the rules of the road in Idaho for stopping for a school bus.
- On a two-lane road, one lane in each direction, traffic must stop for the school us on both sides.
- On a three-lane road, a road with a center turn lane, traffic must stop on both sides.
- If it’s a four-lane road, two lanes in each direction, only traffic behind the bus must stop. Cars approaching the bus from the opposite direction on the other side of the double yellow lines may proceed past the bus without stopping.
- If it’s a five-lane road, four lanes of traffic with a center turn lane, vehicles in both lanes traveling the same direction as the bus must stop. Traffic flowing in the opposite direction may proceed without stopping. It is prohibited for vehicles to enter the center turn lane to pass the bus. However, vehicles wishing to turn may enter the center lane within 100 feet in order to turn left.
