Fatal Motorcycle Accident From Driver Running A Stop Sign

Idaho State Police reported a fatal motorcycle accident from the driver running a stop sign at an intersection. The motorcyclist failed to stop at the stop sign, left the roadway and came to rest in a field about 30 yards off the road. No other vehicles were reportedly involved in this motorcycle crash. The driver was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. He was thrown from his motorcycle from the impact. His injuries were so severe that he, unfortunately, passed away at the scene of the accident. Fatal motor vehicle accidents are quite common at intersections controlled by stop signs. In fact, more than 40 percent of fatal accidents in the U.S. occur at stop signs. That is about 700,000 crashes that occur each year at an intersection controlled by stop signs. These statistics are from a study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Accidents at Stop Signs

The most common scenario that causes a crash at a stop sign is when a driver just doesn’t see another vehicle coming. It could be the vehicle that is required to stop doesn’t, or it stops but fails to yield the right of way. These scenarios make up 70 percent of all crashes at stop signs. Only 17 percent of car accidents involved the driver running through a stop sign.

Drivers Don’t Always Judge Correctly

At a stop sign, drivers are required by law to not only stop but look for vehicle conflicts before proceeding. However, drivers don’t always judge correctly and thus result in a car crash. 44 percent of drivers involved in a crash at a stop sign say they just didn’t see the other car coming. Another 16 percent said their views were obstructed. These statistics are from a study conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
