Five-Vehicle Car Crash Caused by Distracted Driver

Idaho State Police reported a five-vehicle car crash caused by a distracted driver in Coeur d’Alene. The driver of a pickup truck collided with four vehicles stopped at a red light. One driver was transported to a nearby medical center for evaluation of injuries. The others reported no injuries. All were reportedly wearing seat belts at the time of the car crash. No citations have been issued but the investigation continues. The southbound lanes of traffic were blocked for an hour and a half following the crash.

What is a Distracted Driver?

A distracted driver is defined as having been doing one or more of the following, prior to the car accident:

  • Texting
  • Grooming
  • Adjusting the radio
  • Eating or drinking
  • Reading
  • Using an electronic device
  • Daydreaming
  • Distracted by external factors, for example turning to view a car parked on the side of the road.

Ways to Prove a Distracted Driver Caused the Car Accident

If you get rear-ended during a car accident, how would you know that the driver was following too closely or distracted by texting? This is exactly why you need an experienced attorney from Parke Gordon Law Firm to fight for you. Some things you could do to help your case include gathering evidence from the crash scene such as:

Witness testimony. This is especially crucial for proving the other driver was distracted. Gather as many witnesses from those who saw the accident happen as you can. Along with their statement, also gather their contact information (name, phone number, email).

Take pictures and video the scene. Gather photos of all cars involved in the accident showing damages. It is also very helpful to have photos or video of the inside of the other driver’s vehicle to help prove a distraction. For example, if you see open food containers or the other driver’s cell phone sitting on the front seat, take a picture for evidence.

Police report. Always be sure to call authorities after an accident so they can create an official police report of the accident. The police will ask all drivers involved in a description of what happened. The negligent party will typically tell the officer if they were texting or eating prior to the accident.
