What is Considered Running a Red Light?

The Spokane Police Department reported a person injured after a vehicle ran a red light at high speeds in Spokane. This car accident was significant enough to force police to close the road to traffic for hours. A vehicle traveling westbound struck two cars traveling southbound. Witnesses say the driver ran a red light. After hitting the other vehicles, the driver then got out of the car and ran on foot. Spokane Police chased the driver and placed him under arrest. Officials say at least one person was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation of injuries. The investigation is centered on vehicular assault, meaning the driver may have been under the influence or was driving recklessly which caused an injury during the collision.

What is Considered Running a Red Light?

A traffic light may be the most universal of traffic signals. We all know a red light means stop. However, every day traffic citations are written for running a red light. But what is considered running a red light? Running a red light or a stop sign is defined as:

  • Going through the intersection while a red light (or red turn arrow) is displayed on a traffic signal, or
  • Failing to come to a complete stop and following the right-of-way requirements when at a “stop” sign.

Keep in mind a yellow light does not mean speed up. A yellow light means to prepare the light is about to turn red. It is also important to keep in mind of where you stop at a red light. You can receive a traffic violation for running a red light if you fail to stop at the stop line or before the crosswalk at an intersection.

Stoplight Safety Reduces Car Accidents

Obeying all traffic signals greatly reduces car accident incidents. During 2000 to 2007, the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) reported about 800 to 1,000 fatal car accidents from drivers running a red light.
